Problems with my system/viruses,etc.

I have had long-standing problems relating to my pc ever since I upgraded from windows 98 to windows 2000 advanced server. However, since then I have formatted my hard drive twice and installed w2k server.

1) My usb doesn't work despite having loaded sp4, ad-aware, norton's anti-virus, usb drivers, and a new usb adapter

2) My pc is running very slowly having found several viruses such as rbot and spybot. I ran ad-aware and norton 7.6 but it still runs so slowly. Should I try another anti-virus program? Should I format yet again?

3) I tried to download my chipset drivers, sis620/5595, but am not sure what the manufacturer of the motherboard is. I tried running an everest identification software program but it doesn't tell me either. Anyway, none of this helped.

Any suggestions? It is an old pc and I am thinking maybe it is just too old? I need broadband Internet which I am expecting soon.

Hi jross62,

You have 5 open questions at the moment and never replied to the comments posted by the experts, it looks like you don't know how to respond.
You can reply to the experts by scrolling down the page, you'll find a big comment box there. Type your comment there and afterwards click "submit"

To try and help you with your question.
1) This is probably caused by 3) that you haven't installed the chipset drivers yet.
2) Your best bet would be reformatting, then install a firewall BEFORE even updating windows, otherwise your system will be crowded by virusses in no-time.
3) With Everest, what does it say about your motherboard? In physical hardware.

Thanks for the reply. To answer your questions:
1) The motherboard was working with windows 2000 advanced server for a while. However now it does not and am not sure qwhy. Device manager shows a yellow sis620/5595 motherboard. I tried going to www.sis.com but they no longer offer or support those old drivers. I tried to install them again from drivers.com onto a floppy then from floppy to pc but this did not seem to work. I did it from "add new hardware" as well as trying to simply click on the floppy files and hope it installs itself?
2) What type of firewall do you recommend? Is anti-virus software insufficient? Do you mean a physical piece of hardware,or software? Are there any good free ones about? (Thanks)
3) Everest just said I had a sis620 chipset and an Intel manufacturer but no model number-it didn't look like a good analysis to me.

1) True... SIS doesn't support this board above NT4, so it's very likely you're out of luck on this one :(
From driverguide I found this one, it's for winXP, but you might want to give it a try on win2k
    http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=87443 (loginname: drivers password:all)

2) Antivirus is just what it sais, an Anti Virus, no Anti Hackers, no protection between you and the internet. A firewall can block a lot of virusses from even entering your computer (think of blaster, welchia, sasser etc.) For optimum protection you need three things, a firewall, a virusscanner, and an updated system.
For you, I suggest just a software firewall, there are enough of them out there. ZoneAlarm is one of the most used => http://www.zonelabs.com

3) Everest is pretty good, sure, it doesn't know everything, but if it sais those things, you can be sure it's right :o)
