"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

This pretty much sums up basic configuration:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/SMB-HOWTO-6.html

For a basic public and private shares, try:
[public]
        public = yes
        guest ok = yes
        path = /public

[private]
        create mask = 0755
        writeable = yes
        valid users = user1,user2,user3
        printable = no
        path = /private

To create "samba users", first, make sure the user exists on the system, then run "smbpasswd -a user1" then type the user's password.

hi,

Yes, tldp is the surely the first place to try. If you face any problem after that you can refer
http://www.samba.netfirms.com/faq.htm for some solutions to commonly ask problems.

You can also use WEBMIN tool to configure the samba server from a web interface. This tool is available from http://www.webmin.com/
