SBS 2003 Exchnage restore. Info required.

OK, a long situation but I will describe it as best I can.
SBS2003 server (Standard) running exchange, AD, Sophos and Puremessage (smtp virus/spam filter from sophos).
Up and running fine for 2 weeks after install.
Noticed that Puremessage had locked up. Rebooted, all fine (email stops when it locks)
Noticed that Puremessage had locked up again, rebooted, all fine
Noticed that Puremessage had locked up again, uninstalled, and reinstalled puremessage.
Email now coming in properly again.
Puremessage locks up again. Rebooted. Server will not start. Bootup stops on "Applying your settings" before logon.
Rebooted, same problem.
Into safemode, set to manual all Sophos and Puremessage services. Reboot to normal mode, same problem.
Safemode again, set to manual all exchange, veritas and 3rd party software services. Machine boots into normal mode.
In normal mode can't start any services, 3rd party system or otherwise. It takes a long time, errors and says that service did not respond in a timely mannor. Cant uninstall Puremessage, installer locks up with not responding. Cant uninstall it in safe mode as it is a 32bit app and requires windows installer to be running.
Now my view on this cockup is that the best way forward is to probably uninstall puremessage and run exchange installer in repair mode. I have never done this in SBS only normal 2003. Is it possible, does anybody know the command/route.
Alternitivly if that does not work, I need to reinstall onto a fresh hard disk and restore from the tape backup (Veritas BE9.1) however the way that the exchange has been backed up is by in the job selection, backing up the information store. Alternitivly, restore the exchange from tape, but capture the existing database. Is this possible? What files do I need to copy out of the way first? How do I do this?
Is there an easy way to restore the exchange DB if I reload the server. The reason I ask is that if the services are not starting up then it appears to be a core windows problem rather than just a Puremessage/Exchange problem. Maybe an OS reload first would be best.
Secondally, the tape backup is a day out of date. The users are using cashed exchange mode, so have .ost's. Are there any free programs that work to convert these into .pst's? If there is then we can inport the data backin for the day lost from the backup.
This question is urgent, and really good help/reading/hand holding will be worth lots of extra points.
