I have also created an application role (name : VBAPI) in the database with only select permissions.

sp_addsrvrolemember
Adds a login as a member of a fixed server role.

Syntax
sp_addsrvrolemember [ @loginame = ] 'login'
    , [ @rolename = ] 'role'

Am not quite sure this is what you are looking for though...  You can't give SQL permissions to an application... ??

Quite confusing ;)
