Installing ws-x4448-gb-rj45 line card on cataqlyst 4006

After inserting two ws-x4448 line cards in catalyst 4006 - The status lights on both line cards flash orange.

sh module, sh version indicates the slots are 'empty'

if I unplug a line card - the console detects a card was removed...when the card is reinserted (hot plug), console detects it as an unknown card - sh module still indicates the slot is empty

The Supervisor engine is: WS-X4013

You may be suffering from power supply problems.
Your 4006 configuration may require more than one power supply, because I already accounted 375 watts in your configuration: 1x ws-x4013=110W, 2x ws-x4448-gb-rj45=240W and fan box=25W.

Read this documentation: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps663/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00800e47ee.html#1028218

The other explanation for your problem may be the IOS version installed in your 4006.
ws-x4448-gb-rj45 requires at minimum version 12.1(8a)EW.

The unit has 3 psupplies.

Can you point me to any doc that refers to software version compatibility (IOS & CATOS) for this line card ws-x4448-gb-rj45 so I can probably confirm this

The system runs catos..I'll check on that to be sure

You need at least Supervisor Engine Sw 7.1(1a), recommended 7.4(3).

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

You have CatOS 6.4(5) and this is bad for you will not be able to use your WS-X4448-GB-RJ45 in this chassis. You need at least 7.1(1a).

ok..so I need to upgrade catos from 6.4(5) to 7.4(3) (recommended upgrade).

would i need to order anything else? - I'm tempted to order the 'latest' catos version but the doc suggets usin 7.4(3) so I guess I should stick to that...correct?

See here:
Release notes for 7.x:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps663/prod_release_note09186a008007f07f.html
Relsease notes for 8.x:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps4324/prod_release_note09186a00801a162e.html

Looks like your hardware have the minimum DRAM requirements to accept 8.x software and you might be ok ordering the latest catos. As of now, the latest ones are 8.4(2)GLX or 7.6(8).
