NTBACKUP ERROR

I am using NTBACKUP to backup my exchange 2000 information store an d I keep getting this error form the backup. "The device reported an error on a request to write data to media. Errorreported: Hardware failure.
Can some one please tell me what's wrong. I am running Windows 2000 with exchange 2000 sp3, Quantum DLT 7000 tape drive which is new.

has the tape drive ever worked, sounds like a driver problem to me

I am sorry I did not close out this problem before. The problem was with the scsi card. I change the card and everything is working ok.
