On a clean, standalone computer I am attempting to follow oracle by example instructions, I have;
added to the primary dns suffix of the computer,
added the ip and host name to the hosts file,
installed the Ora9i AS infrastructure;
     - name = Ora9ias_home
     - path = d:\ora9ias
     - instance name = infra,
installed the BI and forms option
     - name = Ora9ias_bi_home
     - path = d:\ora9ias_bi etc...
During this Oracle has created a DB = iasdb.jp.
I login to sql as system, create a user, then i go to the c prompt to IMP.  I cant IMP as anybody, I get the message
IMP 00058 Oracle error 12560 encountered
ORA 12560 TNS protocol adapter error
IMP 00000 Import terminated unsuccessfully

Maybe this article from Metalink will point you to the right direction though it is about Designer:

* fact: Oracle Designer 6.5
* fact: CKRAU - Repository Administration Utility
* fact: MS Windows NT
* fact: MS Windows 2000
* fact: MS Windows 98
* symptom: Installing the Repository from the Repository Administration Utility (RAU) gives errors.
* symptom: IMP-00058: ORACLE error 12560 encountered
* symptom: TNS-12560 / ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
* symptom: IMP-00000: Import terminated unsuccessfully
* symptom: Designer client and the Import/Export utilities are installed in separate Oracle Home directories
* symptom: Error when double clicking the executables IMP.EXE or EXP.EXE
* symptom: Can connect successfully to SQL*Plus from the Designer oracle_home\bin directory
* symptom: Error when connecting to SQL*Plus from the import/export tools oracle_home\bin directory.
* cause: The RAU check requirements parameter EXECUTE_PLUS_RAU under the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\REPOS61] has a string value oracle_home\bin\sqlplus.exe where oracle_home is the directory where the import/export tools have been installed or any other directory where the SQL* Net configuration files do not exist.

fix:

Change the RAU parameter value for the variable EXECUTE_PLUS_RAU to just sqlplus.exe.

During the repository installation the RAU determines the location of SQL*Plus and SQL*Net configuration files (e.g.. tnsnames.ora) in order to perform the import operation. This should be the oracle_home for the Designer client.

Note : At the end of the Designer client installation the Universal Installer installs the files required ONLY for the repository installation, migration, import, and export. SQL*Plus should not by used directly from this directory as other SQL*Net files (e.g.: tnsnames.ora) do not exist in this oracle_home.

Hi,

Are you able to import as normal Scott User?
Are you able to login to SQL as the new User that you have created? Also make sure that you are able to start the iasdb Database.

Regards,
Poornima
