HP 4000 will only print from tray 1

Hi There

I have put 8 indentical Dell Optiplex into an office with the exact same setup on all. They share a HP 4000 via a JetDirect 170L. Six of the machines will print to which ever tray they select and the auto setting selects tray 2 because tray on is emply and closed. However two of the PCs will only try and print from tray 1 regardless of the settings. I have gone into the settings and told it to only select tray 2 and it makes no difference. The printer Just will not print. The only way to get it to print for them is put paper in tray 1. I have even shared a printer that works fine from one of the other PCs and the same thing happens when they try to print.

Thanks Joe

I'll be with them later today and I'll give that a shot. As soon as I find out if that is the problem or not I'll let you know.

If MS Word is involved
Open Word-->File--> Print--> Options button--> Set Default tray setting to Use Printer Settings
Also Hit the Go button on the printer and it will bypass the tray option

Thanks.

It ended up being the paper type settings. The HP printer was setup to run with A4 size paper. Within the printer properties there were six different places where I changed the paper type from Letter to A4. Only when I changed all of them did it work properly.

If you recieve A4 documents there is a setting under  Printing Menu--> Override A4/Letter Set to equal Yes

This will automatically set the printer to reduce A4 to letter size.

Thank you, this is one to keep on board for future reference.

Also the letter to legal switch on the side of the tray two drawer could be broken as was the case with me. You might only see this occur when the printer comes from a production environment. The bazaar ways in which electronic equipment breaks on the factory floor never ceases to entertain me. Tonka toys wouln't hold up a day in there. It's a feat just shy of a miracle that the printer lasted for 93,000 pages.
