Hi elmakarge,

You have the option of using a SIP-compatible telephone handset, or a softphone.
A softphone is a piece of software that runs on your PC.  I recommend X-Lite (http://www.xten.com/index.php?menu=products&smenu=xlite)

This will communicate through a server on the Internet called a SIP gateway.  There are a variety of these available, I use GossipTel (http://www.gossiptel.com/)

X-Lite can be configured for different types of routers and gateways.

I hope that this helps - let me know if you have any further queries.

Enjoy!

thank you for your answer.
I saw word "SIP" on some web sites. Could you explain it more ?
The solutions you mentioned above  run with all ADSL modems?
thank you

Hi

You can find out a great deal about SIP at http://www.iptel.org/

An ADSL router might block some of the ports that SIP needs to use, although this would be unusual for a standard "home" setup.
These would generally be a configuration option anyway.  I wouldn't forsee any problems with using a Speedtouch, but I've not personally tested it.
