I have a network with an old MS Small Biz server on it and a Win2k member server.

I want to eliminate the Small Biz Server and promote the Member server to a PDC.

I am not worried about account info, i can recreate those.

This is what i was thinking of doing.

Remove member from domain
Turn off (remove) old Small biz server
Promote member to PDC using dcpromo, use name of domain the small biz was in charge of.  make it first DC in new forest.

I just want to be sure my procees is ok.

Thanks

Joe

That sounds good, just remember that if you have workstations running Windows 2000 or Windows XP, there computer accounts will be invalid. They will not be able to login to the new domain. If you do not have many workstations, you might want to log into them and set them to a workgroup with a different name and then add them back to the domain when you are finished. The normal scenario of just adding the workstation name into the new domain will probably fail because the name isn't changing.

great, thanks -

workstations won't be a problem because we're adding all new computers.  so i can create new accounts for them on the new domain controller.

No problem, if you have any issues after you run DCPROMO remember to come back and post another question!
