Memorex DVDRW and Memoex CDRW won't write.

OS XP PRO

For awhile now my DVDRW and CDRW, both Memorex will not write. They both read fine. I have to use Nero if I want to burn. I ignored it for awhile, and  recenlty I bought a new HD and reinstalled. I thought it would fix it, but it did not.

It's almost as if the built in "burning" festures of XP Pro are not installed, becasue I can burn with Nero.I do not care to use Nero becasue it isjust another HUGE program on my PC.

Any ideas and Thanks!!!

Use Nero and/or Roxio. Forget about XP's built in burner it is not that good. Just turn that feature off "disable the built-in xp recording software before you install any other burning software. Right click on your burner > properties and under the recording tab uncheck the writing software and reboot" and use third party programs. MS really hasn't perfected burning yet but that may by the time the next Windows interation (Longhorn) is released

Hi chick7t7,
> It's almost as if the built in "burning" festures of XP Pro are not installed,

After reinstalling your OS , did you go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and did all the updates required for the OS. I remember there is an update for CD burning software. You may want to do that and check burning again.

I am not sure if there is any specific package given for DVD writing on your machine but as far as I know for CD , the inbuilt software should do the work. Well inbuilt software is not at all sophisticated and noway be compared to Nero but to do simple copying (data files, mp3 songs etc ) , it is more than enough.

chick7t7,

check the second point here
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php

I am sure you already know how to write using that software but just wanted to bring you that to your attention .

BTW, have you tried to write on a DVD made by any other manufacturer than Memorex. If you have never tested writing a DVD on that DVD R/W , then try a different manufacturer's DVD. This can be the solution. DVD drives are very sensitive to media too.
If you have already written to Memorex , then media should not the problem.

Thanks...I do not think i have ver had a memorex CD, currently  I have Philips. I have never burned a DVD either :). I am simple girl, burning back-ups etc. I di get all my updates, but not the CD  one...I remember seeing it.....will check it out now.

Thanks...but I just do simple burning, and I hate having a huge program taking up space (Nero @ 50.2MB) that I do not use....kinds of one of my "obsesive compulsive" things :).

Ok, I tried the update suggested. I receive an error message saying, "This update can only be used on OS with no service packs. Service Packs detected".

Well, Nero is large but it works...so I will just stick with it. Thanks for the advice.

This problem never went away. I found no solutions, but I did find a lot of people experiencing the same thing. I eventually had to do a reinstall for another reason.  This is what fixed my problem.

Once again, thanks for all your expert advice!
