Soundcard inoperative
Recently, I reformatted the HD and reinstalled Win Me using the manufacturer (Micron, Transport, Notebook) furnished disks. The speaker was on the taskbar. Sometime during reloading applications, the icon disappeared. In Control Panel>Sounds the choices are all grayed out. In Device Manager under Sound, video and Game Controller, I removed all three entries. Then went to Add New Hardware. System found the Soundcard and reloaded the drivers. But all the choices are still grayed out. What now?
Thanks, Gene

I used a Microsoft Security Update which, I believe, installed Windows Media Player. But I am almost certain the Speaker was there after that. I installed a photo application called Compupic about the time it disappeared.
Windows an aborted RESTORE is what caused me to have to reinstall Windows!!!!

What if u goto Add Remove programs and uninstall that security update ??
Or Do u know the make and model of ur motherboard and sound cards,,, if yes then u can goto manufacturer's websites and can download the Latest\Updated drivers for them...... !!!
If u dont the know, then Download this utility and install it,
EVEREST Home Edition:
http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=3
it will give u a list of all the hardware attached to ur system, note down the correct
version and make of ur required device, and then search for the appropiate drivers either on
the manufacturere site, or u can also find them on www.driverguide.com

I tried the www.lavalys.com URL from above and got a "page cannot be displayed" message. Do you have another URL?
I am traveling and using the computer in question. It works for webmail and I don't esnt to do anything drastic until I return. But I could try the URL above.
Thank you,
Gene

Problem solved:
I went to Micron's website and got a list of all installed hardware. Many versions of motherboard for same model. Found driver for the actual hardware in my computer, downloaded driver. All OK now!
Thank you
