Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error in Internet Explorer with latest sun jvm 1.4.2_04

One of our clients is getting an error with our java applet and internet explorer.  The error is as follows:

Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
The application has requested the Runtime to terminate it
in an unusual way.  Please contact the applications
support team for more information.

The applet comes up with a blank white screen and the vm hangs, then internet explorer goes down.  Strangely the user says that he could get the java console open and that he saw his memory dropping down to zero.  He also says the applet popped up gray and did the same thing.

I did some basic looking around the net and these forums.  The user has run ad-aware ect and his tech people swear there is no spyware on his system.  The system is brand new and apparently has only the java vm running on it, something I find a little dubious.    I've requested information on which service packs he is using.  It will take some time.  I am guessing more recent than not.

So I want to know:
1. Are there installs of IE without an ms vm ?
2. What are some possible roots of this problem and ways I can get repeatable results

thanks,

Thanks for the reply SheHarYaarSaahil(kind of hard to type ;).

I'll try to get the customer to run it.  HijackThis is a great little program for everything but the latest CWS(horrible, just horrible).  If it were a bad BHO wouldn't it happen consistently ?

U can call me just Shehar :)
You're right, I forgot to mention that.  It's one client, and apparently only happened once so far.  I was told that we wouldn't be able to get him to download and install anything, and I'm hands off on this one from now on out.  Thanks for the reply.  I'll keep hijackthis in mind if I see this again.
