The only burning I'll be doing is my own stuff. Data and my own digital photos.

If you going to get a new burner and use newegg you can get a NEC 2500A for 69 dollars 8X burner solid as a rock. You can get one with EZ CD Creator 6 basic for about 5 bucks more.
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-024&depa=0 Here is a DUAL LAYER one with the software.

As usual all contributed something. Great link for info on the different formats at www.anandtech.com and great link to a good buy from Newegg.
But there is still software that will burn a DVD to VCD format.
You will also have to be aware of what type of DVD brand will still copy DVD's, whereas TDK's DVD iNdi series still does, while Plextor's will not, regarless of the software.
If you are doing Data Backups, Picuter slide shows or making a DVD from a DV Camcorder you'll just need software, and wouldn't make much difference in the DVD Brand. TDK comes with Nero 6 Burning Suite.

Generally speaking, the better format for writing would be DVD+R/RW, 4.7gb per disc for 4x and 8x burners, and are more compatible with Home DVD Players.
