If you have experience of these applications please let me have your views on their relative merits. As FCP is an Apple-based application and Avid is pc-based you will need to have knowledge of both OS/hardware to give a balanced view. If you find a particularly balanced and fair review of both please post the link or copy&paste into this thread - with the source please.

If you have attended a degree course that uses Avid and/or FCP, I would be particularly interested to hear from you.

Avid's system isn't strictly PC based. http://www.versiontracker.com/php/search.php?mode=basic&action=search&str=avid&plt%5B%5D=macosx&x=13&y=8

As for the pro's and con's of each. Avid is a better system but not by much. When you look at the cost/feature ratio FCP is SUPER cheap and almost as powerful. What sort of work will you be doing with whichever system you use? Feature length films for a studio? If that's the case Avid is probably for you. If it's documentaries, short films, or pretty much anything else (some full length films have been produced via FCP) then FCP is your best bet.
