HP pavillion ze5185, LCD is dark. it has been fixed once by HP but now they refuse since its out of warranty.

I have owned this notebbok for over  a year and used it very seldom. 2 weeks after purchase i started to get blue screens, dumping physical memory to disk. Shortly after these blue screens, the lcd is dark but i can see windows is running fine. The lcd stays dark when the notebook is rebooted.
I sent the notebook to HP once and they repaired it. Now they refuse to do this because it is out of warranty.
Radio shack wants over 700 dollars to repair the notebook (619 in parts + 90 labor).
I have used this notebook about 200 hours maximum and i really feel i have been cheated by HP, since this is a hardware problem that keeps recurring.

here are the questions :
1. who else could repair this laptop ?
2. if screen is too dark to see is this the inverter?
3. should i pursue this further with HP? I am really pissed with them, ad have more money than common sense.
4. what is a good notebook to buy in the future? Toshiba ? Dell ?

Hi quovadis123,

I'd do a bit more fighting with HP, but it may be futile.  The problem is most likely the LCD or the LCD controller card.  Either way, you'll probably need parts.

In the future, there's no beating the quality of an IBM Thinkpad.  You'll pay a bit more, but it's worth it.  And, most models come with a 3 year warranty.
