backup tool in windows xp professional and tapes...

using the backup software that comes w/ windows xp professional and a tape drive.

how exactly do i setup these tapes so they are recognized? some of them have been used before by another computer, and the backup program recognizes them... but how exactly are they used by the backup software?

please explain in detail how to load a tape, set it up for use by the backup software, and configure the software to backup daily on 7 different tapes (one for each week).

another problem i am having, is with some tapes, after inserting the backup software does not recognize/react to them... or it does and gives them some weird name like: 'Media created on 6/11/04....'.

Do not want to use any other software but this one that comes w/ Windows xp professional, so please dont suggest alternative.

Please explain in lay terms... thanks!

unfortunately none of the articles describe how to deal with tapes, setting them up, naming them, formatting them etc.

this is the biggest confusion for me... how do i setup an already used tape, or a new one, in the backup tool and give it name, mount it etc.
Well, usually, when you put a tape in the drive, you configure your backup engine to format the tape before using it. If you format it manually using the software, you can name the tape whatever you want, but if you use the auto format option, usually, the tape will be given the name of the current date. When you are doing a backup, you should use a good rotation scheme of 2 weeks (monday to thursday) 3 weeks (Friday 1 - 2 - 3) and month (month 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12)

Monday 1
Tuesday 1
Wenesday 1
Thursday 1
Friday 2

Monday 2
.... etc..

After Monday 1
.....
Friday 3

Adter Monday 2
....
Month 1

This way, you can go back to 2 weeks of weekdays, 3 weeks of fridays, and 12 months...



Also, be sure to use a cleaning tape once per 2 weeks.. Usually, tape backup software recognize these, and use them automaticly, they are ejected automaticly at the end of the cleaning process...
ok, but i do not see how this is done using the windows xp backup software... please explain step by step how to do it using that sofware... menu options, selections etc.
