ArcServe 2000 on Win2000, backup only backups System State

Hi,

When I create a backup job on ArcServe 2000 for Windows 2000 running on a Windows 2000 server, I select all the local resourcess, these are the C-drive, the D-drive, the registry and the system state.  The backup job runs but it only backs up the sytem state.  When I check the activity log it doesn't make me any smarter or it does not display any errors.  In the log it says, at the end, bakcup job successfull, it says how many files and how many directories it backed up and also how many data.  It says it backed up only 815Mb, while this server has a total data capacity from above 10Gb.

Any idea why this can happen?  Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Perre.

In the job queue check the Job Details to make sure it shows that drives C: and D: are selected for backup.

It might also help to copy the portion of the activity log for the job here. It's called arcserve.log and found in the log subdirectory.

I checked the job details in the job queue and all the jobs have the C and D drive selected.

This is the job log from the backup that run this night:

I don't know why it says backup to media MAY, cause the tapes are named like the days, MONDAY, TUESDAY and so on...

That is a very good question, and I don't have an answer. I know of no reason why or how it could report that it is backing up to a tape named MAY when the name is MONDAY.

So is a Rotation job being used?
Check the MONDAY tape to see if it's ID is 5593.
Are there any filters set?

The job is backing up the whole C: and D: drives. That is backing up everything it "thinks" it is supposed to. You can see that it backs up the directory tree, but no files. No files and no errors or skips. This means some how the job is setup to backup the whole drive but finds -0- files to backup.

Perhaps it is a problem with permissions or a problem with the job.

Setup a new user, member of admins and backup users and try that.
Also setup a test custom backup just to backup the C: drive to see what happens.
If that fails to backup any files try a backup of just one directory.
Also as a test run a Count job of the C: drive to see if it sees all the files.

All the day backups are in a rotational setup.

Monday tape indeed has ID 5593, checked the details in the restore window, using restore by session, and there it displayed that it backed up a part of the folder strucutre on drive C, only CA_LIC, CALIC_old, Documents and Settings and a part of the INETPUB folder.  It did backup the complete folder structure of the D drive.

There are no filters used.

That is correct, although it can see the files.  In a count job it displayed that the C-drive had 26 451 files and 2057 folders.  Windows explorer showed me that the C-drive has 25 413 files and 2055 folders.

I tried to do a test backup of the C-drive only and also from the WINNT folder only.  In all cases the backup run succesfully but did not backup any files.  I first tried this with my domain account and after that with the local administrator account.  Both did not change the behaviour.  After that I created a user 'arcback' and added it to both groups as you suggested, unfortunately this did not make a difference as well when backing up the C-drive or a part of the C-drive.

This is the first that I have seen a Count see anything different than a backup or such a problem with backing up files.

See what happens when you backup another system.

ARCserve 2000 is far from a new product.
When did the problem start?
Did you just install it on this system?

Are you using anything special in options, like "only backup according to Archive Flag" ?

Well, I always thought this was going successfull.  In the job status window, everything seemed ok every time but after verifying a week or two ago, I realised that this backup was going very wrong.  So I have the impression that this was going on for a while.  I know this doesn't bring me in a good daylight, cause I should been more on top of it.  Our more important servers use Veritas BackupExec and believe me this is a lot more stable than ArcServe.  Inn the time we were running with Novell servers we were also using ArcServe and we had a lot of porblems to.  Having said that this does not solve the problem I have now...

Currently this is the only machine running with ArcServe.  You probably had the same stories from standardising networks and so on but this server did not get standardised on the Backup software, probably the money was the problem...  Having said that...

Zonaltech, no that is not the case, in the backup method, the 'Full (keep archive bit)'option is selected.

Maybe an uninstall and a reinstall would bring me to a workable solution?  The database gets pruned every day but the size of it stays very large.  Most of the jobs and records in the database are useless cause they have only been backing up the folder structure of the disks and the systems state.

What would you suggest?  I'm getting a little bit nevous, you both can imagine, cause when something would go wrong I know I'm in big trouble.

Thanks!!

Ok, I have run a test backup job from on a BackupExec system.  A full backup does not work because then I need to isntall the BackupExec remote agent.  But I was able to back up files and folders.

Does ARCserve back another system ok?
Try changing the ARCserve System Account.
It is does via the ARCserve Server Admin, Admin, System Account.
If that does not work I'd say a clean re-installation was in order.

Ok, I didn't try to backup a different system using ArcServe.  But I did try changing the system accont in the ArcServer Server admin window but this also did not change anythiing for the local backups.

Then the only other thing I can think of is a re-install.

Backing up another system using Arcserve also did not work.

So then I tried uninstalling ArcServe but had no luck at all, 'Could not find the proper version to perform the upgrade' is the message I get when I try to uninstall ArcServer 2000.

Thought, 'install it over the current version' but that ended up with the same error as above...  Now I'm really getting scared.

That is the way I tried it.  It does not have a 'uninstall arcserve' icon in the ArcServe' programs folder.

Any idea how I can get rid of this or what would enable me to reinstall it.  Cause when launching the Arcserve 2ooo for workgroups setup, it give the same error.

Going into the program setup "is" the regular way to uninstall it. It normally give the option to install or uninstall once installed.

For Windows Add Remove to fail with the same message makes no sense at all.

This is looking more and more like a corrupt installation. Time to pull out the tool box.

Try Chris Uninstall

I tried Chris uninstall but this tool does not list ArcServe as one of the installed programs...  Also tried with MyUninstaller' on the other link but not success as well.  It also did not list ArcServe 200 as being on the system.

Well your just full of suprises. All that leaves is a manual uninstall which since all signs of it are gone already it should not be a big deal. For the most part all that is left is the program directory under Program Files and the registry under Hkey Local Machine\software. From there I'm not sure if it is CA or ComputerAssociates.

Hi, you won't believe this...

I maunally uninstalled all the files and folder related to the ArcServe and also cleaned out the registry for this application.  When I tried to install ArcServe from the CD, on the server itself, it always popped up a window saying 'please insert disk 1' while the CDROM disk was inside the CD player.  So I had to do a remote install to this server, which worked fine.  After the install was done, the machine rebooted and I was able to run ArcServe again.

BUT...  I created a test backup of a folder with 60MB of data, and guess what.... Only the folder structure got backed up.
