Folders not opening, mycomputer brings up search

Hi, i've got windows2000 running on my work computer, and today i noticed something strange-
first: Double clicking on mycomputer brings up the MS Search window.
second: control panel will not come up at all.. it says there is no program associated with it (however i can still access control panel items by using their corresponding CPL files.)
third: after getting explorer going, i noticed that double clicking on folders will not 'open' them. in fact it doesnt do anything. when i try to access the folder via the context menu (which would usually give me the option of 'open', 'explore', 'search', etc) i now only get 'send to', 'cut', 'copy', paste', 'delete', and 'properties'.

I've run a virus scanner to see if it could be that, but my updated version of norton 2004 says i'm clean. The only thing i can figure is that someone has screwed with my registry and i dont know which keys to change back (or what to change them back to!).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello,
I have seen this type of thing before. Most often after a major virus hit and subsequent damage to explorer. Here is what I suggest, reinstall service pack 4, reinstall Internet Explorer.
