please excuse my inexperience, im not an apache admin but have been given this task.

i need to create a .htaccess that will direct users to different pages depending on what username they type.

so link to page 'A.html' pops up the username and password window.

if user types 'userB' for the their username they are directed to 'B.html', and if the type 'userC' for their username they are directed to 'C.html'

is this possbile?

I'd use a small script for this purpose that checks which user is logged in;  to obtain the username, in perl, you would use:

#!/usr/local/bin/perl

$username = $ENV{'REMOTE_USER'};

and then redirect based on the $username.
