LDAP on Windows 2003

I am looking for some information on using LDAP services in Windows 2003.

Can LDAP be used without installing exchange?
I heard something about Active Directory supporting LDAP, how do you install that?

I have reviewed this link and noticed the following before.  It seems it is more for configuring IIS to use LDAP server, but doesn't say much about creating an deploying an LDAP server.


"This section describes how to configure the SMTP service as an LDAP client so you can gain access to directory information on an LDAP server."

Active Directory is a ldap based directory service. To install it, click "start", "run" and type "dcpromo" and then hit enter. This will promote your machine to be a domain controller.
