A broadband router is a device that you use to share your internet connection, it fowards the traffic from your internal network (home) to the external network (internet). this way, all you machine on the same network can all access the internet at the same time.

Computer1
home network ----- Router -----Internet
Computer2

A router is practicly the same thing. but it fowards the traffic between networks.. it could be multiple networks if the router has multiple interface..  the multiple networks do not have to be the internet necessaraly. It could be different branch of 1 corporation.

Network 1------
                      | Router------Network 3
Network 2------      |
                       Internet

Example of a cisco router

There are a HUGE difference of price between these devices ;)
