Simple movieclip target question

I need to know how to write a path to a symbol that is not at frame 1 of the timeline.

Say symbol 'xyz' is nested within symbol '123' and 'xyz' is actually on frame 20 inside of symbol 123.

I'd do...

  _root.123.???

How would I reach that symbol (xyz)?

I'm not sure that you can I'm afraid - unless the nested movieclip is currently on frame 20, or there is an (invisible) instance of the nested movieclip on frame 1.

You can also set a variable to decide how the movieclip on frame 20 should behave when it appears too though.

Do you think using a scrollPane and just adding a .swf file with the movieclip through that is a bad idea?

Not necessarily, although I'm having some difficulty picturing what you mean by that.

I've only been using flash for 3-4 weeks and I didn't know if I missed something in the process.  Sry for being so brief with the explainations.  Thank you so much for your help and even though it may not seem like you helped...you did.  Thanks alot :)
