HP1012 freezes my system on install to OS 9/X bootable G4?

Hi, when I tried to install the software for a new HP 1012 Laserjet on a Mac G4
OS 9/X dual bootable machine (G4/1.25g dusl processor), I encountered repeated
problems. I boot normally into OS 9.22 and thus, chose the "Mac Classic OS 9"
installer option from the installer disc, installing to my OS 9.22 system.  When I
rebooted, the system froze and crashed repeatedly, requiring (when I could finally
get it to do so) running the "UNINSTALL" option to get rid of it and enable booting
up OS 9 again without freezing.  There was a problem "negotiating" the opening
of a display window titled "HP Laserjet Engine" each time - which is when it would
freeze. Other times it didn't even get that far and simply froze on a grayed dialogue
box which was in the foreground of the finder, requiring a quit and restart.

Question, HP says this is OS 9.1 and above,  compatible. Is there some known reason why it will not install in my OS 9 system?  Something to do with this being OS 9
being booted directly vs. through OSX as "Classic Environment" (which I will not
use - I only want to boot from 9.2 alone.  OSX on this machine seems currently to
be corrupted when I try to boot from that startup disk, which may or may not be
an unrelated issue.  Now that I've reinstalled the Canon I560 I wanted to replace, OS9
seems to be okay again.

Thanks for any enlightenment and for your patience reading through all of this.

He wasn't in today. He'll be in tomorrow. I'll send him your question.
Thanks, appreciate that!

Well, I just talked to him, and he said he's never tried it in OS 9.

Have you tried downloading the drivers from HP's web site? The OS 9 driver is at http://makeashorterlink.com/?H55D13339 and it may be newer than what you have on the CD.

I wish I could help more. If the new drivers don't help, you could probably post a request to get your points refunded, since I wasn't much help. I do know that the OS X drivers are stable from what I've seen. :)
Thats okay.  I was able to work thru an install successfully via HP support (took an hour to figure out
certain extensions had to be "On" in order to 'allow' the installer to process correctly).

It's working okay albeit a bit of a memory freezer even in OS 9 when set for "Background" Print, even
on a simple text-only doc, between the time i hit print-command and the response of the printer - for
whatever reason THAT may be ; )  but it does work now.  My mistake was not researching this well enough
to recognize that it was in fact not a Postscript laser but i guess it'll be fine as a cost-efficient text printer ....

Thanks for the follow up notes!
