Hi,

I just came across this link concerning web site file compression:
http://www.seoconsultants.com/tools/compression.asp

I'm not a programmer, and the page doesn't explain in simple terms how to implement compression.  Is it a tag, like a meta tag, that's put at the top of every web page file?  Or is it somehow put elsewhere on a web server?

The page seems to imply it only compresses html code.  My web site pages are a combination of php, html, and javascript.  And my server is a linux server with a mysql database.  How do I implement the compression?  Could you please give an example of the code I should use on my web site for the compression they talk about on the link above.

And are there any major browsers it's not compatible with?  What happens if the browser can't handle the compression, does it default to uncompressed somehow?

Is it reliable to the majority of internet users browsers?

Finally, what's the downside - why isn't it used by all marketers looking to minimize web page download/display time? ...first time I ever heard about it.

I'll split points for more than one response.

Thank you.

Steve

Steve -

This is just a way of compressing files and in this case is a purchasable software utility that sits on the server. The server only sends compressed pages if the browser clearly states it can accept it. For example the Googlebot can't, so it doesn't get to receive compressed files. The downside is that although it increases bandwidth on the server it takes up more cpu time. It's is a tool and like all tools is designed to solve a particular problem and works best in skilled hands.

Before you even think about getting into Formula 1 you gonna need a car that can at least get you round the track! Let's concentrate on the basics of your site and worry about race tuning latter :)

Hi duz,

Ok, I'll accept that.  I don't want to purchase any such utility yet.  I still need to spend my money on other things first, like a good seo consultant.  I just thought it was some type of php code or html tag.

Am I permitted to ask you to contact me off line?  My email is on my site.

Thanks.

Steve
