Yahoo companion not connecting

I have been using yahoo companion for a while with no problems.  Recently I upgraded to the new verison 5.3.12.0 and it no longer works.  The toolbar constantly reads "...attempting to retrieve buttons from Yahoo!".  I am running XP sp2  and ie 6.02 with xp sp2.  I have contacted yahoo and they say that under the Yahoo\companion\data there should be some files however there are none there.  I am continuing to try to get yahoo to help me but it seems to take them a long time to reply between messages.

I guess this is due to additional feature of windows XP SP2 ICF firewall

Looks like the firewall blocks many ports and temporarily turning off the firewall would help us know if that is infact the issue here .

Your ISP may differ and they may have information similar to this to help you overcome the roadblock.

Just a question...  do you have any other issues connecting to internet like if email is working fine , msn messenger or AIM is working fine ..

Perhaps your work Administrator received similar warnings and updates from Yahoo as I pasted above.  If all else fails, I'd ask or check if you have Administrative rights and if problem persists, uninstall/reinstall the Yahoo services.

When you check within IE the View - Toolbar options, is the Yahoo Companion there and checked?

I do have admin priviledges on my computer and under IE view the toolbar is checked.  I have tried uninstalling and re-installing several times. I just want to know what type of files are suppose to install under the data folder that yahoo mentioned when i contacted them and why they are not installing on my computer.

You're being blocked, that's clear; perhaps this aligns to your issue where a user noted a beta pop up blocker interfering with the installation of Yahoo Companion within IE.

Many are having problems with Yahoo Companion as shown here not just for IE, but Firebird and others as well

How do I know if I have the latest version of Yahoo! Companion?
The latest version of Yahoo! Companion is 1.2.0.8 for Netscape and 2.0.1.7 for Internet Explorer.
Check what version you have by clicking the "Edit" button () and selecting "About Yahoo! Companion."

If you don't have the latest version of Yahoo! Companion, upgrade now.

 I installed RealPlayer Version 7 Basic and Companion disappeared.
This is caused by the Netzip Download Demon file downloaded with RealPlayer Basic 7. To resolve this problem, please uninstall the Net Demon file, then reinstall Yahoo! Companion.

To uninstall Netzip Download Demon:
Open the Start menu.

Choose "Programs."

Select "Netzip Download Demon."

Click on "Uninstall Netzip Download Demon."

still no luck, but thanks for all the suggestions.  I did hear back from yahoo and they said they are forwarding the problem to their development team.  So, maybe i will get a solution soon.

Curious if you have Yahoo Plus with XP SP2?  If so, there is a patch:

What if the Windows XP Service Pack 2 patch does not work or a customer can't access the Internet to download the patch?
Users can log in with a Yahoo! Plus ID that has full access to get the patch automatically or manually download it at

Are you sure you didn't HIDE the toolbar?

Click "View," which is located on the IE menu bar.
Select "Toolbars" and click "Yahoo! Companion." This will hide Yahoo! Toolbar (a check beside the item means it is active; no check means it is hidden).

My Toolbar is stuck on "Retrieving Buttons..."
There may be several reasons for this message:
You are not connected to the Internet. You need to be connected to the Internet to get your buttons.

There may be problems connecting to Yahoo! servers, causing a delay in getting your buttons. If you get them sometimes, or if you wait awhile and they appear, this is the most likely reason.

Some company firewalls prevent the buttons from appearing. The newer versions of Yahoo! Companion have resolved most of these issues. Download the latest version on the Yahoo! Toolbar home page.

Try clicking the "Toolbar Settings" (pencil) button and selecting "Refresh Toolbar" from the drop-down menu.
