.net framework fails installation on 2000 machine

When I try to install the net framework 1.1 through windows update, the installation fails.  When I go to add remove programs from the users machine, the .net framework 1.1 shows up as a removeable program.  When I try to remove the program it says that the netfx.msi file could not be found????  I have even loaded the component update CD for VB.net and it fails to load the .net framework.  Can someone help me get the framework installed on this machine?

Thank you.

I have already tried that solution and it did not work because the user's computer could not find the netfx.msi file.

I did however find a way to solve this very frustrating problem.

Begin installation on an 98 or XP machine (I could not get 2000 to work).  While the installation was in progress, copy the IXP000 directory containing the netfx.msi, netfx1.cab, InstMsi.exe and InstMsiW.exe files to another location.  Move the copied files to the corrupted users computer and run the netfx.msi file.  This will install the .NET Framwork without conflicting with Windows Installer.
