Lets see.....

1. You read:

"you could create a subreport to replace all of the fields"

Known issue (maybe here was your problem?):

when a formula which tests for a blank field is created, even though the formula has no errors, it does not complete the requested action when the field is empty.

The following formula needs to be created to replace the actual database field on the report.

If IsNull({database.field}) then
" "
else
{database.field};

For Crystal reports 8 and up, about creating report and subreports at runtime you can read at:
http://support.businessobjects.com/library/kbase/articles/c2007211.asp

2. You read:

"Within your subreport you can split the rows into separate detail sections and supress fields / sections as needed"

About how to supress a blank subreport in Crystal Reports 9, read here:
http://www.businessobjects.com/search/?summary=1&ct=livewww-all&site=my_collection&client=my_collection&proxystylesheet=my_collection&output=xml_no_dtd&lr=lang_en&oe=utf8&ie=utf8&website=&q=how+to+suppress+blank+subreports+in+CR+9&btnG.x=19&btnG.y=14

In Crystal Reports 8.5 and earlier, a blank subreport cannot be suppressed.

Read how to supress a section that containes a blank subreport in CR 8.5, if interested:
http://support.businessobjects.com/library/kbase/articles/c2005853.asp

The rest should be clear.

Regards,

Wesley
