Windows 2000 Server-Random BSODing

Should be quick and Easy for someone out there.  I have a server that's been blue-screening at randomw running Win2k SP 4.  it always seems to manage to do this when I'm not at the box so I've yet to see the stop screen so can't use that to diagnose the error, combined with the fact that I don't know much about reading dump files and I'm a bit stuck.

Is there anyone there who could read the dump file and tell me what's causing the problem?

I'll host it here:

Thanks

Hi meros,

I would try to uninstall MSN Instant Messenger from the server, and then Reinstall or Install Internet Explorer 6.0.

Cheers!

howdy,

have you disabled the auto restart, so that the machine will wait for manual reboot, that way you can see the error

I'm pretty sure MSN Messenger isn't installed on here. I'll check IE 6.0 though.

I thought about that, but if I'm not in the office then it wouldnt reboot until I was there, and, this being the department WebServer, I can't risk that much downtime, unfortunately.

Thanks for te help so far guys.

Yeah.  It gives the wonderful 0x000000d1 error, which, if I understand correctly, could be from anything.  The full text is:

0x000000d1 (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000 0xf662f912)

ok,
try this, it's registery edit so you need to backup your registery first, and yes you understand correctly, however from the 0xf662f912 this seems to be the fix.

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\PerfDisk - OpenTimout. the
current value in decimal is 5000 change the value to 35000

This will change the delay from 5 seconds to 35 seconds before data is
to be collected.

good luck

I gave it a try.  It'll be at least 24 hours before I can see if it does anything, though.

Thanks.

Forget the MSN and Explorer stuff, I have a Windows XP machine with a Windows 2000 dumpchk.exe and dll... I think it is screwed up.... I am going to get the WIndows XP cd and install the support tools. Maybe I won't respond with such a stupid answer next time ;)

Well...I just got another BSOD when I stepped away from my desk for a bit.  Still the same error though.

We're running ZoneAlarm Pro as a firewall.  I'm going to shut that down and turn on the Win2K's built in port blocking to see if that has any effect.

I'll do that first thing in the morning so that I can be in front of it should something happen.

Thanks again for bearing with me.

Sorry about the delay.  Things had me away from the server for a couple of days.  I'm turning off auto-reboot now, so hopefully we'll have a more detailed message, or rather, hopefully we wont because there will be no problems, or...well...either way we'll have SOMETHING.

Got it fixed.  The problem was with Veritas' driver for our tape drive.

If anyone wants to shut this down please feel free.
