ok, first. i have had an emachine for about a year it is a t 2865 model. anyway,
periodically i have had recurring problems with everything just freezing up. it does not seem to be a virus problem or a hardware conflict. i found a conflict between the dial up modem that came with the computer and the dsl modem i installed. so i physically removed and uninstalled the dial up internal modem. for a short time, this problem seemed to disappear.
now it has returned.
NOW THE REAL PROBLEM,
probably 3 or 4 times this year, the computer has frozen and i have wound up in this situation. when it freezes it has to manually be turned off and rebooted.
now yesterday like before, when you turn the terminal back on you are prompted to a screen that says something about a bad command or file in the OS (windows xp). it requests to insert the installation disk to repair the problem.
when the installation disk is inserted the only option is to loose everything and completely reinstall.
i have reinstalled before and lost everything. my IT friend at work told me to get to the BIOS screen and reboot from the cd rom to repair the problem as opposed to reinstalling.
problem is i can not figure out how to get to the bios screen.
now let me clarify, every time it freezes up, this problem does not occur, but it does seem to be increasing in frequency.
how do i boot from cd rom so i do not loose everything. and what is causing it to freeze up?
also, turning terminal on and holding delete or f8 or ctrl enter does not send me to bios
