asked on

how to create NSS partition for hardware RAID on NOVELL 6.5

We have developed host adapter module (HAM) for RAID mass storage controller.

When we try to configure two/more harddisks as raid device, NOVELL shows the raid configured IDE HD's as "UNBOUND DEVICE OBJECT".

Is this CDM problem or an HAM problem?

Can any body help or explain on how to configure raid HD's for NOVELL 6.5 storage system (NSS).

"Novell" is a company. "NetWare" is a product. You have a "NetWare 6.5" server.

Note that this Question is probably best asked in the NetWare TA (https://www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Netware/), but we'll see what we can do.

OK, so the devices are not combined via hardware RAID, right? These are just a buncha ATA disks sitting on the end of some IDE/EIDE adapters, right?

And your HAM is supposed to let the NetWare server see these devices as one big logical device, right? Instead of 2 or 3 or 4 or whatever individual drives, you want NetWare to regard the logical device as one big disk, right?

If I'm right, I suspect that you are loading the standard Novell-supplied IDE drivers (IDEATA.HAM, for instance). If you are, then when your driver loads, there are no unbound IDE drives - they're all already "taken". So your driver has nothing to bind to and shows up as "UNBOUND DEVICE OBJECT".

Since you didn't supply much detail, this is guesswork, but it fits what few facts you gave.

NO.. !! . I am using Hardware RAID only.  Devices are attached to RAID controller Adapter. I can configure RAID0, RAID1, RAID0+1 or JBOD through bios utility provided by vendor. And My HAM is supposed to let the NetWare server see these devices as one logical device.(instead of 2,3 or 4 individual device).

When I issue IdentifyDrive command to Indivudual Hard drives, they always got bound to IDEHD.CDM. When I issue Identifydrive command to RAID device(any of above), the device is listed as "Unbound device Object".

I observed some feilds of IdentifyData(256 words) which become 0 for RAID device. e.g Number of heads, sectors per track, number of cylinders, Max. block transfer etc. field becomes zero.

So out of 256 words of IdentifyData which fields netware expects ?

Thanks & Regards.
