Can't Install Panther cause it hangs on restart

I have a Mac G3 (Beige) that is giving me problem with installing Pather. I currently have OS 9.2 installed. When ever I start the installation of panther from 9.2 I get an error stating that it can't change the startup device. I tried restarting it, and it hangs with a blank screen (no signal to monitor), no HD activity, and no chime. The only way I can get it to start is by unplugging the power cable and leaving it off for 5 min. When I finelly get it to start up, I try to have it boot from the Panther CD, and it restarts itself and hangs again. I've tried reseting the PRAM and that only fixes it for a short period of time. I get alot of restart problems with these beige G3s. Is there anything I can do to fix this. Such as a firmware upgrade? What is casuing it to hang after a restart?

You most certainly have to perform a firmware upgrade (which must be done from 9.x)
on such an old Mac:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117

However Apple does not support Panther on any mac without built-in USB ports:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/requirements.html

However a utility called XPostFacto allows you to install OS X on certain unsupported Macs:

Can I do a install of Panther or Jaguar on another Mac and switch the hard drive into the G3?

To be honest, it would possibly work although you really are throwing it down to chance, but you shouldnt be installing Panther on that box anyway.
It is painfully slow on a B&W G3 with the necessary ports, cant imagine what it would run like on a beige G3.

First it depends on your mac configuration .It should be atleast 128 mb Ram and atleast 3gb free space. It is a Older mac so you have to update your fimware through PRESET the  RAm.Before installation OS X first format your hdd in Extended format and reinstall OS X.
