I have a Compaq Presario 5015 running 266 mHz with 256 RAM and PII and I need to upgrade to 500 mhz.  Is this possible?

Sorry, but I don't think you're going to be able to do that.  Most computer vendors use motherboards that only support the processor that comes with the computer or, possibly, one or two above that.  Also, to the best of my knowledge, Intel never made 500MHz Pentium II processors.

You are definitely out of luck - as spectere says, the PII doesn't go up to 500 (450 is the max).  In addition, both Katmai and Coppermine require a 100FSB, and the PII has a 66FSB.  It also runs at 2.8v, whereas Katmai runs at 2.0v and Coppermine runs at 1.6v.  So unless the Dell motherboard lets you change the FSB and the cpu voltage, or automatically recognizes PIII's, it won't work.
