Animated Preloader While Excel Reports Generates

I have an ASP page that generates an Excel spreadsheet in a new browser window for users. Unfortanately, the queries can take 5 to 10 minutes to return data for the spreadsheet while the users stare at a blank white screen. Infact, sometimes this process even freezes up their computer.

Instead of a white screen, is there a way to have some animation indicating that the Report is running and then turn it off when the Excel spreadsheet is ready? Perhaps the spreadsheet can be created as a backgroud job. (Although we dont have permission to write to the server)  Any ideas?
