Files corrupted after Install/Chkdsk -- recovering orphaned files

Hello folks and thank you for your time. This one is really inportiant for me. your efforts are appreciated.

Recently I installed SP2 for XP. THis program conflicted with theme software that I had installed and for some reason it caused my boot up to become corrupt and fail. No problem, I have a ghost image from my first instilation and I just re-installed the XP os. The problem Im experiencing came right after the install. When it booted up for the first time from the new install, it indicated something about a hard drive recovering from a serious error and it needed to scan the drive and repair it. I thought it was a little fishy since i had just made a new install and knew my secondary drive (my D: drive) had been functioning fine before. I allowed the chkdisk to run and it began to start "recovering orphaned files" it said something aobut indexed files--im not sure on all the details but it started scrolling through several of my files which are located on D--My archive of pictures, music, and apps.

After chkdisk finished recovering orphans . . . whatever that means . . . it finished booting up. A few hours later I noticed that there were some Executables files that did not work. they would just pull up a dos box for a second then colse. Then a few days later i tried to burn some pitures my wife had given me on to a cd but several of the putures would not pull up--several of them were new picutres that I had put on my d: drive after the new install. I also noticed that several of my mp3 files were now corrupt and would cause WMP9 to crash when i tried to play them.

Now my questions.

1. What is the best way to recover the corrupted files? I havent had any problems with the hard drive before but I can understand if its just giving out. (its about 1 year old.)

2. What viruses are there that will do this? I have virus protection installed and have run a scan on the computer and it indicated nothing.

3. How can i prevent this from spreading? it seems more and more files are going corrupt.

Thanks for your help. If you need more info let me know and ill try to be quick to respond. .  .please help. My wife is pretty upset i lost her pictures and I dont want to lose my entire archive.

Ps. If you suspect it is a hard drive failure, how do i check to see if that is the case?

Thank your for the link . its a maxtor.  . . I ran the diagnostic and it indicated that my drive is "certified" undamaged or in other words no problems. I also ran a virus scan today and got nothing.

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

I suggest you do a zero fill on the drive, and reinstall the image. It sounds like some remnants from the previous install are hindering you
