Friend needs a laptop.  Okay gurus, here's the question:

Laptop needs to be able to do the following:
Accountant needs to enter lots of numbers, so he needs the ability to enter numbers based on having 789, 456, 123 as on a desktop keyboard arrangement (some laptop keyboards may have this capability)
Wireless internet access through an AT&T wireless-connected cell phone
Run Quickbooks Pro 2004 with payroll reasonably quickly (big program)
The usual:  email, office apps, web, etc.

What do you think?

He'd buy used if necessary to keep costs down, get more performance.

There are plenty of fairly new (and even brand new) laptops on eBay for less than $500, with 2+ ghz processors and 512+ MB ram (should be more than enough power). I believe most cell phones connect with computers through either a serial port or bluetooth connection - I saw very few machines with bluetooth built in, although you can just get a bluetooth USB or pc card connection.

I don't have much experience with laptops so wouldn't really know which is "the best" but my Toshiba has worked great for me.

I don't think I've heard of a laptop with a separate number keypad. Actually I think I have seen this a couple times, but it is certainly something that would require a larger keyboard and therefore would only be found on more expensive laptops. Most laptop keyboards have a 10-key number keypad available through a special "function" key, where the regular letter keys can temporarily act as a number keypad. Of course, you can also get a small separate keypad (USB connection) for $15-$30.

Sorry, forgot about the phone.  Most of the connectors for the phones are USB also. so no problem there, but it depends on the specific model of phone.
