Mac Trash question, involving external HD

I am running Mac OSX and want to know when a file is trashed from an external hard drive is that file copied to the main HD when put into trash. Does it just show the file in the main HDD's trash can just so you know that its in the trash can or is it literally on the main HDD?

No, it's not copied to the main HD. If you put something in the trash, then eject the volume that the item was on, the trash can will appear empty. When you reconnect that volume, your trash can will suddenly contain items again.
