You mean a Text field?
If you do not specify nothing it is intended as it can accept zero length, otherwise it must be declared as Not Null

for example:

create table MyTable(MyField Text(10), //accept zero length
                               MySecondField(19) not null, //value is required
                               MyThirdField Integer);

MyField Text(10)

is not the same as

MyField Varchar(10) ?

Yes it's the same, btw forgot mi last comment, it's about required property, not zero length, sorry
