Upgrade Ram for Asus P4S800

I have a P4S800 (SiS 648FX) Series with two DDRAM 512MB 32MX8 PC-3200C2 COR% modules.  I want to upgrade to more ram, however the mother board information says:

3 x 184-pin DIMM Sockets support max. 3GB non-ECC DDR SDRAM memory
(PC2100/PC1600 up to 3 DIMMs; PC3200/PC2700 up to 2 DIMMs; 1GB PC3200/2700 with 32 DDR chips up to 1 DIMM only)

I cant upgrade to more pc3200 ram, as 2 slots are already in use.

Can i mix and match the 3200 with one module of 2100?

Or would i be better off buying 3 moules of the pc2100 in 1 gb incremnts and rpelacing the pc3200 modules?  In that case is that possible because the manuf says 1gb of pc3200/2700 max, however, this is pc2100.

Thanks

>>Can i mix and match the 3200 with one module of 2100?
you can, however, your memory speed would run at the slowest speed, which is the PC2100 module @ 266mhz.  You would actually see a decrease in preformance if you did this.  The best way to run memory is at the same speed as your FSB, with PC2100 that would be impossible.

this would slow down preformance.  Unless you are doing massive video editing or 3D redering, you have aboslutely NO need for 3GB of RAM.  1 GB of RAM is plenty as of right now.

What I would do IMO would be to get a 1Gb set of PC3200, two 512MB.  I would then try to sell the RAM that you have in there now.   I would not suggest that you put PC2100 RAM or anything slower then PC3200 in your computer as the increase in RAM would out way the preformance increase.  Believe it or not that drop in speed would slow preformance a lot, more then you might think.

Hello,

I already have two PC-3200 512mb modules in the computer, however, this is not enough ram.  I am running these programs at the same time and have continually received memeory errors:

Dreamweaver
Fireworks
Excel - usually a couple of files open
Outlook
IE - usually a few windows

Plus a multitude of bg programs: one note, symantec anti-virus, v2i, etc..

My PF Usage in the Performance window is 1.21 gb.

It seems whenever i am using dreamweaver with fireworks and try to open another application i get slow downs and errors.

Then maybe instead of a different RAM you could get a processor with HT.  You might see the biggest increase in preformance then.  You can utilize the whole processor and set certian programs to use which part of the processor.

You can also try to set your virtual memory to a higher setting, this will not give you better preformance but will stop the errors.  Do you know how to do this?  You should have at least some virtual memory, maybe it is set to 1MB which would not help at all.  Cause if you are running at of memory, then your virtual memory is likely set very low.  If windows sets the virtual memory you would never run out of memory as you are saying here.  If you really are set on more RAM, then I would suggest that you get a different motherboard.  With that many programs running, more, but yet slower RAM will not help your system.

Can I ask how many processes you have running?

I know that I could have all of those programs running and would not have a problem with memory, I have 1GB of RAM and I use those programs quite often.

Did this just start happening?
I would also suggest that you look through your system processes and see if you have any system processes that are running a lot of memory.  You should also close all programs that you do not use.  Make sure that you use MSconfig to configure your start up to only have the neccesary programs start at start up.

Look at this website and see your processes

This processor does have hyper threading...

I have the paging file set to Initial size 1536, and max size 3072 (mb) Is this enough?  I have 55gb free space on this drive (c)

I also have four other drives with free space that i could use for a paging file...

I have 54 processes running, all of which are nessasry, as i have elimninated the uneeded tasks from startup and set them to manual start.

When i started using more programs like backup(v2i and one other), APC ups, diskeeper etc.., i noticed a decrease in preformance.  However, these programs are needed.

>>I have the paging file set to Initial size 1536, and max size 3072 (mb) Is this enough?
that is more then enough.

If you put page filing on a different drive other then your operating system it will help with preformance some.

With 54 processes running increasing the RAM is not going to help as your PF acts as RAM when you over flow.  Reducing the number of processes will help, but 54 processes is a massive about of memory and takes a massive computer to run that smoothly.

I just don't see how you could have 54 processes that are needed.  Servers hardly have 54 processes that are needed.  If you truely need 54 processes to run on your computer at one time then it might be time that you get a workstation rather then just a normal computer.

List all your processes here, I bet we can eliminate some of them.

DkService          disk keeper
gearsec            cdrom drivers
BRSS01A            brothers printer drivers
mainserv           apc ups backup program

I disable a few of the other ones.  The computer is running much better now that I changed the paging file to another drive as per your recommendation.

One Note I use all the time.  It is a great asset to me.
I use word as my email editor, so that needs to be running and wasting ram.
Cmd was how I generated the list.

That’s it, thanks.

your welcome.
