which authentification have you set in horde?
see config/horde.php and there for $conf['auth']['driver'] = 'xxxxx';
and are those settings $conf['auth']['params'] valid?

The place where horde is installed. search for horde.php
e.g. in a shell with
find / -name horde.php

to get some infos from that fiel do a
cat /etc/horde2/horde.php | grep conf | grep auth

to get all information about the auth-config

/etc/horde2 is a very unusual place to install horde.

It depends which imap-server you are using
if there is a file /etc/cyrus.conf
you can try starting the imap-server with
/etc/init.d/cyrus start

Which linux-distribution is installed on that server SUSE, RedHat, Debian ??

Hm I don't have a debian-system, but a

ll /etc/.init.d/

should show all services that can be started on your system. You might post this list so I might see which IMAP-Server is used/installed.

ll is a shortcut/alias of the ls -l command
On the she do a
ls -l /etc/init.d/

There are a lot of possible IMAP-server on linux/unix, so the output of that command (ls ...) will show which are installed on your system.

how can i check to see if it started?

webmail password for accout still not working. comes back:

login failed for some reason.
most likely username or password  was entered wrong.

pop email (same account is working fine)
