I have recently been given an Acer TravelMate 508DX that reportly 'just stopped working'. When I boot it up on the first screen that appears with the Travelmate logo a lock appears in the top left and a password (lowercase only, uppercase characters don't appear when you type them) is required. I'm guessing this is the BIOS password but I don't know what it is.

Is there an Acer default password or some way of getting past this? I've tried pretty much everything including:

1. Deveral default bios passwords for Award, AMI and Phoenix (I beleive it's a Phoenix, however I have tried 'phoenix' as pass) BIOS' - try three times and it stops the machine.
2. Looking for the bios battery or a CMOS reset jumper which isn't behind any of the back hatches. Also tried opening the machine unrewing the screws on the base, and can neither open it or remove the keyboard - would be interested in know how to do both of these.
3. Downloaded the manual from Acer, which doesn't even have the bios type.
4. It doesn't get to the stage where I can boot anything off floppy to recover the password so that would be out of the question.

I need a default bios password for the 508DX or some way of getting past this.

Unfortunately none of these, if anyone has any passwords they can confirm should work for this laptop is has recently become more urgent. Bonuses available.

Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Increased point value, extremely important - needs to be someone who knows what they're talking about.

sorry to say this, but if the above "back door" passwords didnt solve your problem, then you have no choice but to take the system to an authorised acer repair center to have them reset the password. The password is a boot password and is stored on a chip on the motherboard, short of replacing the chip, your solution is to take it to a repair center.
