I am on a budget and i would like to know what would be the most cost effective way stream media from my site. I have heard of Nullsoft and the plug in the let you download which enables you to play what you are listening to on Winamp free online. What other ways is it possible to stream Mp3s or Mpegs on a website.

There are a few mp3 options I know of (there may be more):

FOR MP3s:
1. Upload you MP3 to your server

2. create a text file with the full URL to your MP3, e.g. http://www.myserver.com/mp3s/mysong.mp3

3. save the file with a .m3u extension, rather than an .txt extension

4. Upload this .m3u file to your server (does not have to be in the same spot as the mp3).

5. When you link to your audio, link to the .m3u file, not the MP3 itself. This will cause the file to open automatically in the client's default MP3 player. This is nice for two reasons: First, it provides you with a very easy method of streaming audio on a budget. Second, while it allows people to listen to audio, they never actually see where the source file is, so it makes it harder for people to download your content to their local machine.

You can also use the mms:// protocol (instead of http://). So, in your link, instead of having it be http://www.myserver.com/mp3s/mysong.mp3, it would be mms://www.myserver.com/mp3s/mysong.mp3. This launches the file in windows media player. Unfortunately not everyone has this...

Glad that helps ;)

I'm not too familiar with implementing an internet radio station myself. However, the following article describes how to do it in detail using Windows Media Encoder, which you can get here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx

This is the article that describes how to set up the station:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/Videos/internet_radio_station.aspx

You might also want to check out Winamp's SHOUTcast broadcasting software. I am pretty sure that it is free, provided you are playing music you have the rights to play.
Some links you should visit for this are:
http://www.shoutcast.com/
http://www.shoutcast.com/support/docs/
http://www.winamp.com/

I think it may be hard to reach a lot of people this way, however.

You might also want to check out a place called Live365.com. You can read about them here:

and visit the site itself at http://www.live365.com

Hope that at least gets you started.
