Unwanted pop-up window (even when IE is not running)

Hi, a window pops-up every 10 mins. on my screen (even when IE is not running) under Windows XP. The top blue line of the window says "Reminder + [date] + [time]" (e.g. "Reminder October 9h 2003 10:17:03"). Inside the window appears the "Cannot display page" message. I use ctrl+alt+delete and end app, but it comes right back. The only recent change I have made to my system was a memory upgrade performed at CompUSA  Do you know how to get rid of this pain in the a$$. I am pretty much a newbie and would be very grateful for a 'fix' that I could understand. Thanks for you time.

Hello Photoman57 =)

First thing,,,, goto Start>Run>msconfig>Startup
untick all applications except Antivirus and Firewall entries
restart and download these tools

Download these tools and install them:
========================================================
AdAware ==> http://www.spychecker.com/program/adaware.html
SpyBot  ==> http://www.spychecker.com/program/spybot.html
SpySweeper >> http://www.spychecker.com/program/spysweeper.html
SpywareBlaster >> http://www.spychecker.com/program/spywareblaster.html
Stinger >> http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger
========================================================

then Reboot in Safemode >> http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm
and run the above tools to get rid of everything !!
Restart back in Normal Mode to check for the problem now ??

If problem is still there, then Download HijackThis v1.98.2 from here, run it and Save the LOG file:
http://tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe

Then Post it at this site >> http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english
and it will automatically analyse it for u,,, Fix everything which it asks u to delete :)

and if still u cannot get it working, then Post here that LOG file, and we will tell u that what is BAD in it and how to remove them :)

!! Good Luck !!

Hello  SheharyaarSaahil,
I have already tried running anti-spyware through Yahoo. It finds nothing. Do I really have to download and run all 5 of the programs you suggested? Is there an easier fix for this. As I mentioned...I am very new to computers.
Thnaks again for your time.

Here is the log file you requested. FYI... the reminder widow was not running when this log was created. Should I wait until it pops-up again, and then re-scan with the hijackthis program?
Thanks.

No, your log doesn't show your system as clean.

The following should be fixed:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ycomp/defaults/sb/*http://www.yahoo.com/search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ycomp/defaults/sp/*http://www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ycomp/defaults/su/*http://www.yahoo.com
Have HijackThis "fix" these; then -
Clean out all your temp folders:
# C:\Windows\Temp - delete ALL of the CONTENTS of the folder - Not the "temp" folder itself!
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files (all contents)
  <=This will delete all your cached internet content including cookies.
  This is recommended and strongly suggested!
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp (all contents)
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files (all contents)
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp (all contents)
# Empty your "Recycle Bin".
Reboot your computer and with "Show all Files and Folders", including hidden and system, enabled -
with all browser windows closed - run HijackThis and
post a new log file here.
Regards...
RF

Hi!  Photoman57

Well, I don't see anything in your log that stands out as being harmful.
Let us know of any problems.
Some of the experts here have put together a thread conceeerning spyware, security, browser issues, etc.:
( http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Browser_Issues/Q_20975384.html )
Also, one of the experts here (PeteLong) has a good site that deals with various computer problems:
( http://www.petenetlive.com/ )
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?
( http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=3051 )
All of these are scources of very good information!

Most of the HijackThis experts suggest that you install Adaware SE and Spybot S & D,
and that you run BOTH on a regular basis.
(Also, Adaware should be configured manually to do an "in-depth" scan -
not run using the defaults).
One picks up things that the other one does not!

Good luck!
