Dedicated server management

Hi, I am about to purchase a dedicated server. I basically use it for my own site, which runs a php login and logout thingy, and I host gigs of video files over ftp. The thing is, I am having a personality split of whether I should get myself a managed server or un-managed server. I am a total newbie to dedicated thing. I could get the managed one for 110/m; unmanaged one for 84/m. So, advice pls~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I mean, is there a need do you think for managed service? I would have a Direct Admin for both plan, so is it not enough still just to have the panel? Is it really that complicated to manage a server myself? What I am planning now is to get 84/m and learn things from using it, but I start to get hesitated when people told me I would get nuts when things go wrong, and security management.

Ar~~~~~

>How much time do I have to learn / manage my own server?
hm....I have a lot of time. :)

>Is my site critical?
Hm......free sites, so......well, it;s fine.

>Can it stand to be down for 1, 2, or more hours at a time if something goes >wrong?
Yup, who cares, it;s my site.

>Do I trust Direct Admin to always do the right thing?
Being hearing alot of nice reviews of DA than CP, so...yeah.

Hm~~~ cool. And thats what I just did 30 mins ago, signing up an un-managed one. Hope things would go fine.

Side notes:

>gigs of video over FTP:

If you're concerned about security, don't use FTP.  SFTP is a secure replacement for FTP, comes preinstalled on most Linux distributions, and has several easy to use, free clients (http://winscp.sourceforge.net/eng/).

Also, how many gigs is gigs?  You may wish to opt for a virtual server instead.  They share CPU and memory resources (which are plentiful these days) and cost significantly less than a dedicated solution.

hm......I will be probably going to use around 40 gigs of the 80 hard drives for that. Hm......does this..sound ridiculous...?
