IBM iSeries Access 4.3 and *WSCST printing

I've got a Windows 95 PC with IBM iSeries Client Access V4R3 loaded, and need to print to a locally attached Zebra printer as a Virtual Printer from AS400.  I've got a generic/text only printer created, and I'm trying to configure the session to print to the printer, but there's no *WSCST model in the printer models list, as there is in later models of Client Access.  I've got Client Access V4R5, but I'm wary of upgrading the Win95 PC unless I really have to, and I'm not sure if upgrading to that SR would fix the problem.  Has anyone here been able to add a *WSCST printer model in V4R3?

Not planning to upgrade, just adding a new printer.  If I go into emulator, start or configure new session, and choose printer as the emulation type, and setup, I don't see any options for Zebra or *WSCST in the Printer model drop down.  Can this be set to None and still work, as long as the Customizing object is still set correctly?

you won't see Zebra option, or HP option
it's by TYPE and MODEL #, right?
somewhere, you have to make the as400 see the printer

have you tried to set it up as a RMTOUTQ?

you have to tell a zebra the dims of the labels
and were to start & finish, font size, etc.

a zebra print file looks like this, and they use diff lang. for newer ones

This is on the PC Client side, not actually in the AS400.  Since it's locally connected to the PC, it just uses the workstation ID I give it when I create the session for it as the printer name.  So I'm actually looking at the Client Side application, configuring the PC5250 Printer Emulation Setup properties.  So I'm seeing a field for Message Queue, Library, Font for iSeries print file, Checkbox for Transform print data to ASCII on Iseries, a field for Printer Model, Drawer 1, Drawer 2, Envelope hopper, a check box for Printer supports ASCII code-page 899, a field for Customizing Object, and Library.  I've been told I need to find a value in the Printer Model drop down for *WSCST, but the version of iSeries Client Access that I'm using doesn't show that in the list, although it does show Epsons, Xerox, Okidata, etc.  I can manually enter the customizing object and library, but I'm limited to the field choices for the printer model.  Hope that helps.

i think your problem is that the choices it's giving you is for text printers
a zebra has to be set up as a label printer only -

the *WSCST is workstation customizing object should be set to *none
the *WSCST is a field name  - not a field option
the option for that field is *none or *same

the type and model number (5256 model 3) tells the system it's a zebra
versus a laser

Are these numbers being pulled from the AS400 writer properties, or the client side iseries application?  When I've set up virtual printers, I haven't had to actually create the print queue in the AS400, just create a print emulation session on the PC, log on to it, and then direct my print jobs to that workstation ID.  That's what I'm trying to do on this one, no luck so far.

this is AS400 writer specs for a zebra

AS400 doesn't care if it's virtual or real,
as long as the type/model is correct
client access has to give the AS400 something
that the AS400 will recognize

print emulation has to be a label printer
the AS400 is not going to recognize a text printer
as a zebra printer, it will not send a zebra print file to a text printer

print queues, msg queues, etc. are automatic, as is most the specs
IF you get the type and model number correct for the zebra

*MFRTYPMDL (manuf. type model) takes care of most settings
transform must be set to *NO (zebra lang. is specific to zebras only)

you might want to post this question in
programming/platforms/as400

somebody there probably knows more about client access
than i do, i don't like it and don't use it
