Why do I need to upgrade the firmware on some HP printers before they will print from win2003 server

I am migrating around 2000 PC's from one print server (NT4) to another Print server(2003)
We use mostly HP printers with Jet Direct Cards

I have noticed that some printers cant print jobs from the new print server without a firmware upgrade. The job goes into the queue and then disapears without printing. After a firmware upgrade most of these work fine. I can still print to the old print server queue or to an IP address.

What is the difference between 2003 print services and NT4 print services?

The differences are extreme...  If you want a technical review, you are welcome to read the following article..  Actually, very good explanations of the versions from NT > 2000 > 2003
