_msdc.domain.com DNS zone

I have just created a new domain and new dns zone in my company.
It has created along with the "domain.com" zone a "_msdc.domain.com" zone.

I understand this zone is specially created to allow machines to find services and domain controllers.

When I have looked on our existing domains whch are all W2K servers and workstations I cant see a _msdc zone.

Why is this and does this mean i dont need it??

What would be the reason for not having it?

You definitely need it, ad if it's missing, it's usually incorrect DNS settings.
On your DC/DNS, and on all of your domain members, make sure the DC's address *only* is listed in the TCP/IP properties (be that via DHCP or static; do NOT use 127.0.0.1 on the DNS itself!). If you have additional DCs with DNS running, let them point to your first DC/DNS as primary, to themselves as secondary DNS server. The first one should only point to itself. That makes sure your internal lookups work correctly.
For internet access, delete the root zone (if present; it's the single dot: ".") on your DNS in your forward lookup zones. Then open the properties page of your DNS server and configure forwarders to point to your ISP's DNS. The forwarders section is the *only* entry in your network where your ISP's DNS should be listed.
In addition, make sure that in the properties of your AD domain name in DNS, Dynamic Updates are enabled (in the reverse zone as well, if you have created one).
