CRAXDRT error 507 : An Exception Occurred

When trying to download a Report I am receiving this error.  This is not a random occurance.  It is happening to all users all the time.  If I go click the back button and try the report again I am getting "CRAXDRT error 70 Access Denied".  If i close the browser and try the report again I get the 507 error.

Here are the configurations

Windows Server 2003 build 3790
Crystal Reports 8.5.0.217
Crystal Enterprise 8.0
IIS 6.0
McAfee VirusScan 8.0.0 DAT 4391

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

rotciv99,

I would advise that you follow the process outlined in mlmcc's link as it may still be the same problem.  I understand that this is happening all of the time for you, but "randomly" in Biz Object speak just means that it doesn't necessarily happen every time - because it does happen every time does not necessarily mean that it isn't the same problem.  For instance, if the issue is related to a specific Windows service running, it may appear random to some users but if you always have that service running then it'll be consistent for you.

I tried the hotfix mentioned and it did not fix the issue.  This problem is happening to all of my users all the time.  I've been getting complaints from everyone of them.

What edition of CR8.5 did you purchase?  It needs to be the Developer edition in order to distribute reports though CE may supercede that requirement.

Is this on all reports or just a few?

CE does supercede that requirement - with CE you can distribute reports from any compatible edition of Crystal.

Good question about the reports though - is this one report or every report?  Also, by "download a report" exactly what do you mean?  Is this users trying to view a report instance or trying to export a report?

Have you tried changing the viewer used?  I'm not very familiar with CE8, but I know in 9 you have your choice of about a half dozen viewers so if you have that option you might want to see if the condition persists with another viewer.

We have CR Professional 8.5

It is happening on all of the report.  The report is viewing, but when you try and export it, that's when the error comes up.  We have the same set up on our development server and it is not happening there.  The only difference that I can tell is that in dev Windows 2k3 was upgraded and the prod server was built from scratch.  I have not tried changing the viewer.  If that were the case where would I go to do that.

Thanks for all of your advice.

>>> Change the viewer

On CE9 after you log in via e-portfolio you click on preferences and one of the choices is the default viewer.

Are you sure there isn't a patch / service pack that was applied at some point on the dev box that hasn't been applied on production?

Also here's another thought.  Since it's an access denied message, you should make sure your IUSR and IWAM accounts have write access to the export folders.  Could be nothing more than Windows security blocking Crystal from creating the export file because of permissions.

I tried the security access and compared it to the dev server.  It was off and I corrected it.  It is still not working.  I looked into the patches and there is only 1(one) OS patch on the dev server while there are 16(sixteen) OS patches on prod.  There are no CR patches on dev.  In prod I just did the patch mentioned above.

Are you using ODBC connections to the data - where they created with administator authority?

Obviously there's some difference between the configuration and that's tough to figure out w/out sitting in front of the machines - I'm just tossing out some ideas about what the differences could be...

We are using ODBC and they were created with admin authority.  I've tried to go through and check all of the settings.  I've synchronized the IIS settings and now the folder security settings.  I can't think of anything else it could be.

Are you certain the export dll's were installed on the production machine?  You should at least be able to export into xml format if nothing else because that's straight into the browser and no permissions issues.

I'm not sure what else to suggest.  There's obviously some difference(s) between the machines but w/out sitting in front of them I can't say what it is...

It sounds to me like a security issue but you say you've checked that already so I'm not sure what to suggest other than keep looking - there must be something different somewhere...

See the thing is we installed the backup prod server the same way as the prod server and it also has the same issues.  The difference is that the dev server was upgraded (Win 2k to Win2K3, ColdFusion 5 to ColdFusion MX) and the prod and prod backup servers were installed from scratch.  That's the only difference I can think of.

I have trouble believing an upgrade works better than a clean install but you never know.

Since you ae getting an Access Denied message, this really sounds like a permissions issue.  Does the user have write permissions to the server folders?  In particular TEMP, the report folder, etc?  Crystal does create some temporary files when you export.

Since you can view the report i doubt it is the connection.

Well I've proven that an upgrade works.  I believe that it is an IIS issue with permissions.  Since IIS 5.0 has a more open security policy then when upgraded to IIS 6.0 the security policies carry over.  The thing now is to find out which settings.  For now I am going to upgrade a couple of servers and move my site over.  If anyone can think of anything please let me know.

That makes good sense.  I don't know if these will help you or not but they may get you in the right direction of where to look at least...

PAQ / No Refund

I believe there's enough good information in this thread to justify a PAQ but no points awarded unless asker returns to verify if problem was resolved.

We have the same problem (error 507). Crystal 8.5 creates new reports on Dev server and does not creates them on production server.
Both servers have brand new 2003 installation and identical application code.

Does anyone has new information if this issue was resolved?

Thanks

We were able to resolve this issue by settings "write" permissions to c drive root directory for NT account that runs IIS. Permissions needs to be set only to c-root an not need to be propogated to any underlying directories.  CR reports itself are saved in anoter location. Did not have time to investigate details of what exectly Cristall needs to write on c drive. I also did not reviewed "oiffcehelper " answer. No comments of this.
Thanks everybody

I was unsure of the repair proceedure for this. I too am having this issue on a win2003 Server. I don't have it on the 2000 server.
I am security consious but I am not sure what account to apply write permissions for.
Can someone who has had experience with this issue and resolved it, give me explicit instructions on the fix.
