msxml3.dll error '80072f78' when requesting a page

I have a web page running on Window 2000 IIS server that is using object MSXML2.ServerXMLHTTP to get a web page from an Apache server and I receive random errors as the following:

msxml3.dll error '80072f78'
The server returned an invalid or unrecognized response

This error doesn't show every time when I run the page. When it does show, it runs fine after I refresh the page.

The code I am using is:

Dim objXML, strPageText
Set objXML = Server.CreateObject("MSXML2.ServerXMLHTTP")
objXML.open "GET", "https://login.someweb.edu/uip/checkticket.page?ticket=" & strTicket&""
objXML.send
strPageText = objXML.responseText

Does anyone know what causes the error? I googled and didn't find anything helpful.

Thanks!

You might try using MSXML 4...but I doubt that will help.

I'm wondering if this might be caused by a proxy between the two servers.  There is a proxycfg tool you can use to configure the ServerXMLHTTP object.  ServerXMLHTTP does not use the IE auto proxy detection that the client-side version uses.

Also, you might try using getAllResponseHeaders to see what the remote server *is* returning.

I just read where the Checkpoint firewall can cause invalid http response errors...I'd really look close at the proxy firewall issue, including whether your ISP has one you don't know about.

Mike,

Thanks for your response.

I found out in my case, this probably is related to some issues with using SSL. After I swithed to non-SSL, I haven't seen the error for over a week now. There is no proxy or firewall involved in this type of traffic in my case.

The following link talks about the issues with SSL

Thanks much,
