Perl script is not reading link containing " & "

esternal links to site categories containing "  & " are not read .

example of link containing the " & "

 http://www.sitename.com/categories/bred & butter

as youn see the & is not read

Is there a way to substitute the " & "  of the link with another character that can read by the script as it were "&"
